For Los Angeles based recording artist and songwriter Joseph Rutakangwa, love is most interesting when it stops being simple.
His forthcoming album is being built around that idea. Rather than treating love as a single emotion or writing a collection of unrelated songs, Rutakangwa is developing the project as one continuous emotional journey. The relationship changes as the music progresses, and so does the person experiencing it.
The story begins in a place of contradiction. Someone can know they love another person and still struggle to remain close. Intimacy can feel comforting and frightening at the same time. The instinct to protect yourself can exist beside the desire to give yourself completely to someone else.
That tension gives Rutakangwa a foundation for exploring love beyond its idealized version. As the album develops, fear begins to give way to trust. Connection becomes commitment. Desire becomes more physical and uninhibited. What starts with uncertainty gradually becomes a willingness to build a life around another person.

His influences stretch from soul and rock to Afropop, indie folk and Latin music, but he increasingly returns to a simpler principle: the emotion has to survive everything built around it.
That philosophy is shaping the new project. Rutakangwa is drawn to arrangements that leave room for the song itself, often finding power in relatively simple combinations of piano, acoustic guitar, bass and voice. Genre can change from one moment to another, but emotional clarity remains the center.
The album also marks a shift in how Rutakangwa thinks about his identity as an artist. The goal is no longer simply to release individual songs. He is becoming more intentional about how songwriting, sequencing, imagery and the broader creative world surrounding the music work together.
The album title, tracklist and release date remain unannounced. For now, Rutakangwa is allowing the story to emerge before revealing all of its details.
